Salsa from scratch: rhythm, steps and connection
How to start dancing salsa without fear: counting, basic step, frame, and the first combination you can use at a social tonight.

Salsa looks fast and complicated from the side — but it starts with just three things: rhythm, basic step, and connection with a partner.
Why salsa is a great first dance Salsa is social by design. You don't need a perfect body or years of training — just a sense of pulse and a willingness to listen to music. In Armenia, salsa nights run every week, so you can practice right after class.
Counting: 1-2-3, 5-6-7 Salsa music is counted in 8, but steps fall on 1-2-3 and 5-6-7. Beats 4 and 8 are pauses — that's what gives salsa its swing. Clap on 1 and 5 with the track before you move your feet.
The basic step Forward-back for leader, back-forward for follower — on a small floor square. Keep knees soft, weight centered, and don't leap. Two minutes of this to music already looks like dancing.
Frame and connection Elbows in front of the body, palms light, no gripping. Leader signals with the center, not arms. Follower keeps the frame and finishes every step — connection does the rest.
First combo to try at a social Basic → right turn (lady's turn on 5-6-7) → basic → cross-body lead. Four eights, fits any salsa track, and you never stay stuck in place.
Music to practice Start with mid-tempo classics: 90-100 BPM. If you can talk while dancing, tempo is right. Once basic is automatic, add faster tracks.
Come to Pulse Dance Studio on Saturday — Anna Mkrtchyan breaks this exact sequence down in 20 minutes, then you dance it with rotation.
